En début d’année, S&M présente 3 nouveaux cadres qui vont sortir prochainement. Je trouve le Cam Wood juste trop beau, il me le faut absolument. Je guète Dan’s Comp et Empire BMX pour savoir quand il sera mis en vente. Pour finir, je passe commande chez Empire le 16 avril. Comme à chaque fois, ils n’ont pas les stocks à jour et je dois attendre une bonne 15aine de jours. Le cadre et quelques autres pièces (guidon, potence, adaptateur pour axe arrière, …) arrivent à bon port début mai et je commence tout excité à monter mon nouveau BMX. D’habitude, à chaque fois que je commande des pièces de BMX, je me plante quelque part. Cette fois aussi. Il semblerait qu’il y ait un souci avec le frein arrière. J’essaie et ressaie, je m’énerve, je laisse tout en plan et retente le lendemain, rien n’y fait. Impossible de monter ce foutu frein comme il faut. Je me dis que le problème ne vient pas de moi et décide de contacter directement S&M (le 11 mai):

I recently got myself a gorgeous Cam Wood frame. It’s really awesome. But… I’m having some trouble putting brakes on it. It seems that the brake mounts are too low, meaning that it’s impossible for the brake pads to touch the rim and the arms of the u-brakes are rubbing against the tire (Odyssey path 2.10). The wheel is not slamed to the front, it’s about in the middle of the dropout.

Am I doing something wrong (this is not the first bmx I’m building… been riding for 15 years)? Is it possible that the frame has a defect? Would you like me to send some pics? Thanks for your precious help!

Deux jours plus tard (14 mai), j’ai une réponse succinte de la part de S&M:

Et le même jour, j’obtiens un début de solution:

Hey Manuel, I am going to have you send your frame to Pro-Section. They are our Distributor in Switzerland, once they get it they will send you out a new frame. I included Eric from Pro-Section in this email so please work with him from here out.

Le lendemain matin (15 mai), je relève mes e-mails, je cherche dans Google qui est derrière ce “Pro-Section” et je réponds illico à Dylan, et enchaîne sur Eric:

J’envoie à Eric le même e-mail que j’ai envoyé précédemment à Dylan. Je m’attendais en fait à ce qu’Eric soit au courant de la chose, mais bon, je ne sais pas trop comment fonctionne le rôle de distributeur d’une marque de vélo…

Je te tansmets l’email que j’ai envoyé à Dylan de S&M. En fait, les “brake mounts” (je sais pas comment ça se dit en français, désolé) sont mal positionnés et il est impossible de monter des freins. Je viens volontiers à un entrainement au Bout-du-Monde. C’est le mercredi et vendredi, mais à quelle heure? Il y en a un aujourd’hui?

Il s’avère que le cadre de remplacement qu’a reçu Eric est identique en tous points au mien. Il a donc soit le même défaut et tous les cadres de la même série sont défectueux, soit je suis vraiment une pive et je ne sais pas monter un frein. Comme S&M existe depuis plus longtemps que je ne fais du BMX, je me dis que ça doit être moi le problème. J’essaie encore et encore, avec 2 modèles de freins, sur 2 cadres différents: rien. J’écris un appel au secours à S&M (10 juin):

Today I met with Eric Breuils from Pro-Section, the swiss distributor of S&M, to exchange my Cam Wood frame with a new one. Unfortunately it turns out that both have the same measurements. The brake mounts are at the exact position on the seatstays. So either I’m missing a point, or there is something really wrong with that frame. As you can see in the attached pictures, the distance from the center of the brake mount to the center of the rear axle is approx 22cm (8.66"), the wheel diameter from the center of the rear axle to the middle of the rim is about 19.5cm (7.67"). The brakes are between 3 and 4.5cm (1.18-1.77") depending where you put the brake pad (the measurements seem a bit odd on the pics because of the perspective, sorry). Does this seem right to you?

On my previous frame ('07 Standard 250L OX, 21" TT) the distance rear axle/brake mount is 23.5cm (9.25").

The rear end of the Standard is 13.75" vs. 13.65" on the Cam Wood frame (see http://www.vitalbmx.com/product/guide/Frames,7/Standard/250L,546)

My current frame (not exchanged) has the serial number 030911.

That tire might just be to big, will it work with a tire that’s not so knobby? Maybe a 2.10 revenge tire?

Mais bon, au stade où j’en suis, toutes les idées sont bonnes à prendre!

I got some 1.75 tires. I’ll give it a try tomorrow, but I think that if the pad doesn’t touch the rim no matter how close/far I position the wheel, the problem isn’t the tire. I’ll even try without a tire, just the bare wheel. Thanks for your hint, and sorry for taking your time, but it really bothers me that I can’t run brakes :(

Cette fois, je sais que c’est du bluff.

Yup. As you can see in the first batch of pics I sent you in a previous email (May 11, 2009), I tried a DiaTech 996 Fiesta brake (or is it a Hombre? can’t remember, it’s 8 years old and worked perfectly on a 2001 S&M Dirt bike classic and a 2007 Standard 250L).

J’essaie pour la troisième fois toutes les combinaisons possibles, mais je n’arrive à rien. Désespéré, je post un message sur un forum (17 juin) pour voir ce que d’autres BMXers ont à dire. En même temps, je me dis que ça pourrait mettre un peu la pression sur S&M pour qu’ils fassent avancer les choses. Je fais aussi une vidéo pour montrer que je n’ai pas fait de montages photo. Les réponses sur le forum ne se font pas attendre, les gens ont l’air d’accord avec moi (c-à-d qu’il s’agit d’un défaut de fabrication), donc je décide de relancer S&M. Cette fois, je mets Chris Moeller, le fondateur et président, en copie, ainsi que Neal Wood, le responsable des produits. L’e-mail du 18 juin, je fais un peu la pute:

I haven’t contacted Odyssey as you suggested, because the Evo 2 brakes I got work perfectly on a friend’s FIT Dak frame. On every frame I measured, the distance between the brake mounts and the axle position on the dropout is bigger than 23cm. It’s 22cm on the Cam Wood frame.

What do you suggest? Thanks for your attention.

Hey Manuel, I’ve been looking in to this for you the past few days and I found out what is the problem. When we made the fixtures and the measurements for the CW we designed it around our specs on the Revenge brakes. I just found out that our Revenge brakes have more pad adjustability than any other brake I’ve seen. A friend of mine who has that same frame, from the same batch, originally had the same problem. But he put on a Revenge brake and it works. We are going to change the position of on the next batch of Cam frames in the next few months, so that all brakes will work right. It get’s difficult to try and design everything around all the other companies components, and some times we run in to issues. So I apologize for the major inconvenience that you have been having and want to send you a pair of our brakes. So I can please have your address I will get a set out for as soon as possible. Once more I apologize, and hope that I can make your situation better. Thank you for your support and your understanding.

S&M propose donc de m’envoyer des freins tout neufs et qui fonctionnent avec ce cadre. J’ai hâte de voir ça!

That sounds awesome! I understand very well that with all the parts makers, it must be difficult to design the most generic frame possible. Could I have the brakes in black or white? If it’s cheaper for you, you can just send me the minimum (e.g. I don’t necessarily need the pads, or the cable… ). My address is:

We have sold 92 Cams frames so far, which will all have this problem if the rider wants to run brakes and a big tire (2.10+).

We need to make a batch of bikes with the correct brake position, and start replacing the faulty ones.

Correct brake position, new decals, and a new gusset.

Voilà. Au final, j’ai probablement passé pour un gros chieur (sur le fond j’avais raison d’entreprendre la démarche, c’est sur la forme que j’aurais peut-être pu m’y prendre différemment), mais au moins j’ai un BMX avec un frein fonctionnel.

Le pire, c’est que quelques semaines après que j’ai monté le frein que S&M m’a envoyé, je suis tombé un peu par hasard sur un site où Cameron Wood lui-même se fait interviewer et où on peut voir quelques photos de son BMX. Et surprise! Il roule avec un frein Odyssey, exactement le frein que je n’arrivais pas à faire fonctionner! Haha! Pour ma défense, on peut voir sur une des photos qu’il roule avec la roue arrière dans une position dans les pattes arrière à la limite du raisonnable, donc exactement ce que je voulais éviter.

J’avais mis en place une Google Alert pour mon nom et prénom, si bien que si Google me trouve quelque part sur une page web, je suis automatiquement averti par e-mail. Or un jour, après cette aventure, je reçois une alerte avec un lien sur le site de S&M. Ils ont mis dans leurs news une photo de mon BMX. Quel honneur :)
